About Us

Our Purpose

Our aim is to provide a unique learning environment where each child can explore in a meaningful way and develop a sense of belonging to the greater world around them.

Our Curriculum

We offer a unique “curriculum“ where your child will be encouraged to explore learning through all seasons and all of their senses. There is less focus on traditional classroom learning but more time spent on experiencial learning. We strive to know each child as an individual human being, with individual learning needs. Our main directive is social-emotional learning. Your child will be encouraged to question, listen, lead, and follow. Nature school well prepares children for success after preschool and kindergarten readiness.

Our “Classroom”

Farm/Fish/Forest

Second Star Farm Outdoor Nature School is uniquely positioned on a 5 acre farm, bordered by a historic fish hatchery, a salmon spawning stream, and 60 acres of protected forest land. Each day will be spent exploring and learning on the farm, in the forest, and near the stream. This allows for a most unique, extraordinary “classroom”! Preschool is an amazing time for learning and experience. What could be a better place than outside, in this special environment for your preschooler to learn in?

Meet the Team

Director/Lead Teacher Joy Pothan

With 30+ years of experience with children, a degree in Early Childhood Education and Childhood Development, a parent to 8, grown children, and a love for the Earth and all living things in it, our lead teacher, Joy, is particularly qualified to give your child an amazing early start to learning! While homeschooling some of her children, she imagined this preschool where a young child could learn by experiencing nature and exploring all it had to teach.

Lead Teacher Megyn Candiliere

Megyn’s love for the natural environment, children, and animals have been her life’s focus. Her instinctive way with children has always drawn them to love her. Along with her focus on agriculture and life science, these special talents make her a perfect fit for your child to explore and learn from. While raising her 2 small boys, Megyn is currently working on a degree in Early Childhood Education and leads our T/Th AM class.

Teaching Assistant Iysha Mathews

Iysha's caring, gentle, sensitive, spirit is evident in her interactions with children. She brings her excellent knowledge of the Spanish language and ASL to our school. Her diverse background allows our children to connect with her on multiple levels. She is working towards her K-8 teaching certificate while raising her young daughter. Our hope is to have her be at the forefront of our K-2nd program, once she is qualified.

Teaching/Farm Assistant Whitney Hunt

Whitney's experience growing up in a teaching family made it natural to begin her adult life in a school atmosphere. This experience along with her deep love and concern for animals and children led her to our school. Whitney is currently pursuing a degree in animal care and behavior. Whitney has a sweet, gentle, calming, way about her that the children and animals gravitate to.
